Boxcutter- Glyphic

i rarely feel compelled to write a blog post about a musician or album..

However, it’s been a while since i’ve been so mesmerized listening to a new cd, in this case the second album from irish musician Boxcutter.

I purchased it alongside Untrue, the second album of the mysterious, near-godlike Burial, and while its not bad, its not nearly as good as i had hoped, or expected after hearing quite a lot of hype about it.. (his first was definitely better) Glyphic, however, comes as a very pleasant surprise, as i’d hardly heard anything about Boxcutter before buying this cd.

A bit hard to categorize, (calling this dubstep would be an oversimplification at best), i was strongly reminded of Squarepusher ( his album Feed me weird things in particular) and Aphex Twin in a few of the tracks, but to put it simply, this is a collection of refreshing, atmospheric music that takes about 3 listens to really begin to appreciate (in my book, if you like it too much at first listen, you’ll be bored by the third). This is highly recommended.

Also, the cd art is ridiculously cool..

Thanks for that. Certainly worth a listen. Did you ever come across the Dope on Plastic compilations produced by John Stapleton on React Records ? It started out in 94 and I think was eventually 6-8 albums. A great mix of the more funked up and ‘trippy’ end of breakbeat. I haven’t heard them all (lazy) but I have a funny feeling you will like some of it.

Dope on Plastic 2 springs to mind as a good starting point. Now or Never by Crustacean is bliss.

Hi Rebekka. I hope this message finds you well. I followed your link over to MySpace and gave Boxcutter’s music a listen. You’re right it took a few listens… I really like it. But how do I get this CD? I have an account on MySpace but have never used it or done more than just log in so I can have access to the links that direct me to MySpace. Are those “edits” all that’s available? (Well, I’m sure you’re not their sales person or rep. but you said you’d been listening to it so I thought I’d ask.

I bought the actual cd, i didn’t download it anywhere..
you can order it here, for instance..
there you’ll also see the new burial, as well as one called Box of dub, which i also bought (but have yet to listen to)…

Disagree about burials’ 2nd album, really good, give it a few more listens Rebekka ;)

The Boxcutter lp is on my “stuff to check out” list, shall be keeping an eye out. So much good dubstep related stuff around at the moment, check out albums from Pinch, the Hotflush label and Shackleton for more good dubstep!
